Abstract

Thin-layer chromatographic analysis (TLC) was done on carotenoids in Echinostoma trivolvis rediae isolated from Helisoma trivolvis snails. TLC of the redial extract on silica gel developed in petroleum etherdiethyl ether-acetic acid (80:20:1) showed 2 pigment zones; the least polar zone had a retention factor (R f ) of 0.93, identical to a beta-carotene standard, and the more polar zone had an R f of 0.17, identical to a lutein standard. TLC of the redial extract on a C-18 reversedphase layer developed in petroleum ether-acetonitrilemethanol (2:4:4) showed a fast-moving zone (R f =0.56) identical to a lutein standard and a low-moving zone (R f =0.10) identical to a beta-carotene standard
