Abstract

Manganin pressure transducers have been deposited by r.f. sputtering and flash evaporation on steel specimens and subjected to pressures of up to 20 000 lbf in -2 under hydrodynamic lubrication conditions in a disc and ball machine. Pressure distributions through the contact have been observed directly. Thin film thermocouples alongside the pressure transducer measure temperature simultaneously and have shown an unexpected drop in surface temperature at the contact exit. This technique provides a powerful tool for studying the behaviour of surfaces and oils under high dynamic loading conditions.
