Abstract

Nanoscale adhesion on magnetic disks lubricated with molecularly thin perfluoropolyether (PFPE) Zdol films was investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips 20-40 nm in radius. An effective method in which the adhesion force distribution in the spreading region of step-shaped lubricant films is measured to elucidate the effect of lubricant thickness is presented. From the correlation between the thickness and adhesion force distributions in the spreading region, it was found that minimum adhesion could be obtained with the application of a one-monolayer lubricant film.
