Abstract
We have measured the thermoelectric power of individual singlewalled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), using a novel mesoscopic device. Microscopic heaters and temperature sensors were fabricated adjacent to chemical vapor deposition grown SWNTs on a silicon oxide/silicon substrate. Temperature gradients greater than 0.1 K/μm were achieved along the nanotube axis. The measured thermoelectric power of individual SWNTs ranges from 70–230 μV/K under ambient conditions. A strong modulation of thermoelectric power as a function of the gate electrode was observed. This change has been related to the change of the electrical conductance by the Mott formula.
