Abstract

Curves of saturation magnetization vs. temperature have been obtained for a number of samples of basalt which have been used in the magnetostriction experiments of Stott and Stacey. Magnetic minerals are identified and confirmed with X-ray powder photographs. Particular attention is given to one of the specimens in which the magnetic mineral is unchanged by heating in vacuum or in nitrogen but in which a new material is formed by heating in air.
