Abstract

We have investigated the effect of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (MgSO(sub)4.7H(sub)2O) on the flammability of cotton fabric, obtaining the optimum add-on value of magnesium sulfate to impart flame retardancy to cotton fabric in the range of 9.90-13.31 g anhydrous salt per 100g fabric. A thermogravimetric analysis of pure cotton, treated cotton, and the salt was fulfilled and the thermograms were compared and commented. results obtained fortified The Gas Theory expressing the expelling of water in a desirable range, before the thermal decomposition of cellulose occurs.
