Abstract
The failure behavior of solids is affected not only by mechanical loads but also by the change of temperature and/or moisture. These external disturbances can interact and their influence on the integrity of structural members can be reflected in the energy stored in a unit volume of material. Determination of the volume energy density will involve mechanical deformation in addition to changes in temperature and/or moisture.
