Abstract
The low-temperature thermomagnetic properties of a free-electron gas coupled to an external helical magnetic field of variable strength and pitch are calculated. The diamagnetic behavior of the system is shown to exhibit some novel remarkable effects which differ substantially from the constant field Landau theory. In the strong field regime (B∼104 G) the magnetization, susceptibility, and helicity modulus are evaluated, yielding some new physical results.
