Abstract

The thermodynamic proton ligand stability constants of p-substituted N- m-tolyl benzo hydroxamic acids in aqueous dioxan solution have been determined at 25 and 35°C by a potentiometric method. The p K a varies linearly with the mole fraction of dioxan but non-linearity with the receiprocal of dielectric constant. The effect of temperature and solvent on the process of ionisation is discussed. The p K a are correlated with the Hammett equation.
