Abstract

The activity of sodium oxide in Al+ α-Al 2 O 3+ β-Al 2O 3,Al+Na+ β-Al 2O 3, and β-Al 2O 3+ β″-Al 2 O 3 coexistences was determined at temperatures in the range 800–1200 K. At 1000 K, the sodium oxide actiivity in β-Al 2O 3+ β″-Al 2O 3 coexistence is 1.0×10 −9 and it is 10 4 higher than ohat of l+ α-Al 2O 3+ α-Al 2O 3+ β-Al 2O coexistence. The sodium contents of molten aluminum equilibrated with α-Al 2O 3 and β-Al 2O 3 between 952 and 1073 K were determined. The dependence of the sodium pressure of β-Al 2O 3+ β″-Al 2O 3 coexistence temperature and oxygen pressure is obtained between 923 and 1173 K. These results were utilized to construct the Na-Al-O isotherm at 1000 K.
