Abstract

A method is described in this paper to obtain information on the thermodynamic properties of ternary oxygen compounds of alkali metals through the measurement of oxygen concentration in the liquid metal which is in equilibrium with the appropriate phases. This method has been used in both liquid sodium and liquid potassium. Gibbs energies of formation of K 4CrO 4(s), Na 4MoO 5(s) and Na 4FeO 3(s) are derived by this method in the temperature range 423–826 K, 705–931 K and 773–904 K, respectively.
