Abstract

Polyethylene crystals grown from dilute solution have been oxidized with hot concentrated nitric acid so that all re-entrant chains are severed. The enthalpy of fusion, ΔH, of the product, shown by infra-red analysis to be a mixed acid/ester, is considerably below the figure anticipated for the corresponding n-alkane. There is only a slight increase in ΔH on hydrolysis to the dibasic acid.
