Abstract
Thermodynamics of reactions that are possible in the carbon–tungsten–oxygen system under the conditions of kinetic experiments on oxidation of diamond with atmospheric oxygen in the presence of tungsten have been analyzed. A kinetic scheme of the process consisting of reactions, in which changes of the Gibbs energy are maximum in value and negative in sign has been proposed. It has been shown that the scheme satisfactorily explains the fact of a decrease in the diamond oxidation rate by modification of diamond active centres with tungsten. It has been defined that at low tungsten content the slowdown of the reaction occurs by the mechanism of inhibition and at high tungsten by the mechanism of the negative catalysis.
