Abstract

A thermodynamic analysis and laboratory investigations of the phase equilibria in the system C–Al–TiO2 are performed. This system is of interest for immobilizing irradiated reactor graphite. The region of the relative content of the components of the system that allows for maximum inclusion of carbon in a carbide-corundum matrix in the final product is determined. It is found that in the process the carbon is partially volatilized in the form of CO. The amount of 14C escaping is estimated.
