Abstract

The energies of combustion of 1-naphthylacetic and 2-naphthylacetic acids and 1-naphthyl and 2-naphthyl acetates have been determined using a static bomb calorimeter. The enthalpies of formation in the crystalline state at 298.15 K have been derived for these four naphthalene compounds. The values obtained for − ΔH f o(c)/kcal th mol −1 are: 1-naphthylacetic acid, 85.85 ± 0.42; 2-naphthylacetic acid, 88.90 ± 0.45; 1-naphthyl acetate, 72.89 ± 0.46; 2-naphthyl acetate, 73.99 ± 0.46.
