Abstract

1. A thermodynamic analysis of the possible reactions in the oxygen-free systems BN-Me and Si3N4-Me, where Me is Ti, Zr, Nb, or Cr, established that the systems BN-Ti and Si3N4-Ti can provide effective thermite mixtures giving rise to reactions leading to the formation of a boride, a nitride, and a silicide. 2. An experimental study of the systems BN-Ti and Si3N4-Ti (at stoichiometric compositions corresponding to the probable reactions), which included a qualitative estimate of the mixture ignition temperatures, final combustion temperatures, and linear combustion velocities, and x-ray phase analysis of solid reaction products confirmed the possibility of employing these systems for the preparation of thermic mixtures giving high heat yields.
