Abstract
High-resolution RBS spectrum is measured when 300-keV He+ ions are incident on a PbSe(100) single crystal along the [001] axis. The observed surface peak can be resolved into several peaks which correspond to successive atomic layers. This feature allows to estimate the thermal vibrational amplitude of the surface atoms. Comparison between the observed amplitude and the theoretical one calculated by means of the Debye model indicates that the thermal vibrational amplitude of the surface atoms is enhanced. The surface Debye temperature is estimated to be 113 K from the observed result while the bulk Debye temperature is 156 K.
