Abstract

We report measurement of the thermal relaxation time constant of a mixture of powdered cerium magnesium nitrate (CMN) and liquid 3He in its superfluid phases. At the superfluid transition of liquid 3He, there is a discontinuity in the thermal time constant. A thermal time constant discontinuity would be expected from a simple model for the CMN-3He mixture as two coupled thermal baths. The discontinuity may be used to extract the ratio of heat capacities of 3He below and above the superfluid transition temperature.
