Abstract

1. In selecting or recommending a lubricant intended for prolonged use in a frictional assembly (with one-shot lubrication), one must take into account the thermal stability that is estimated on the basis of the decomposition or oxidation rate under the service conditions. 2. The decomposition or oxidation rate of lubricants varies exponentially with temperature. 3. The temperature at which a lubricant can be used is determined by the value of the activation energy of the decomposition or oxidation process, by the operating time, and by the amount of lubricant introduced into the frictional assembly. 4. A demonstration has been given of the possibility of plotting curves for the kinetics of decomposition (oxidation) at low temperatures on the basis of data obtained at higher temperatures.
