Abstract

Al-Ni binary alloys have been proved to have good thermal stability. To improve the mechanical properties of the Al-Ni alloys, effects of additions of micro-alloyed Mn, Sc, and Zr were studied. The Mn alloying caused alterations of eutectic morphology by changing eutectic fiber of Al3Ni to lamellar and irregular shapes of Al9(Ni,Mn)2. It also resulted in larger eutectic diameters of Al9(Ni,Mn)2 than that of Al3Ni. Due to such transformation of Al3Ni to Al9(Ni,Mn)2 eutectic hardness of Al-Ni alloy was significantly improved. Moreover, influences of temperature and time for age hardening of the alloys were investigated. Increased hardness and coarsening resistance were attributed to Al9(Ni,Mn)2 eutectic and Zenner pining mechanism of Al3(Sc,Zr) precipitates. Finally, it was found that Al-4Ni-1Mn with Sc and Zr addition showed the greatest potential for using as load bearing structure at elevated temperatures.
