Abstract
RXO 4 compounds (R = rare earth and X = V, As or P) exhibit a crystallographic phase transition sensitive to the magnetic field. They furthermore have a large thermal conductivity which is increased by application of the field. The possibility of using these compounds for magnetic cooling is examined. TmVO 4 and DyVO 4 are studied with particular interest.
