Abstract

This communication presents a comparative study of a single basin solar still under various modes of operation. A simple transient analysis of all the modes under the same meteorological conditions has been presented. The water depth in the solar still and the absorptivity of the basin liner along with the water flow over the glass cover of the still has been found to affect the daily distillate production of the system considerably. The thermosyphon mode enhances the daily distillate production. It has also been observed that the evaporative heat transfer coefficient is a very strong function of temperature.
