Abstract

Measurements on the bolometric spectrum (250 – 2500 cm -1) and on thermal hysteresis in the resistivity of orthorhombic TaS 3 are reportd. Hysteresis loops which occur for voltages below the non-Ohmic threshold (V T) close for V > V T, causing increases in the bolometric signal. A plateau occurs in the spectrum for ν > 1500 ± 30 cm -1 at ∼ 100 K, but disappears rapidly with increasing temperature. This plateau is tentatively identified with excitation across the charge density wave gap.
