Abstract

Macroscopic charge quantization is analyzed in the case in which thermal activation across trapping barriers dominates over tunneling and the barrier heights are comparable to the charging and thermal energies. Barrier suppression, the image force due to the finite electron charge, and the contribution of unstable charge states are considered. The effects considered may partly account for recent experimental data on high-temperature single-electronics in semiconductor and granulated systems.
