Thermal expansion of solid CH 4 and CD 4

Abstract

The linear expansion coefficients of solid light methane CH 4 and deuteromethane CD 4 have been denned in the temperature range 10°–24°K and 6°–58°K, respectively. The question about the nature of rotational motion of molecules in CH 4 and CD 4 crystals and about the existence of low temperature phase transition in solid methane is discussed.
