Abstract

The thermal expansion measurements under several kinds of conditions have been carried out for Lu(Co 0.90 Ga 0.10 ) 2 Laves-phase compound. With decreasing temperature, the significant increase of the thermal expansion due to the spontaneous volume magnetostriction ω m ( T ) appears at low temperatures. Under magnetic fields, ω m ( T ) spreads over a wide range of temperature due to the induced ferromagnetic moment above T C . On the other hand, ω m ( T ) becomes smaller by applying hydrostatic pressure p , in addition to the significant decrease of T C . At p = 1.1 GPa, ferromagnetic state disappears and the thermal expansion curve becomes close to that of paramagnetic Lu(Co 0.91 Ga 0.09 ) 2 .
