Abstract

In order to develop solutions for reducing energy consumption, an evaluation was made of the Civil Engineering Department building in the Isfahan University of Technology (IUT). As a part of this analysis, governing equations of mass, momentum and energy transport were used to model the heat flow in a typical classroom. The model was developed using finite element numerical method. The results of the simulation include temperature profiles and air flow streamlines. Some inefficiencies were observed due to the facilities set-up in the classroom. These inefficiencies could lead to students' discomfort. In order to improve the classroom living conditions, some practical recommendations were proposed. These suggestions consisted of guidelines for thermal isolation and air conditioners' locations. The numerical simulation model of the heat flow in the classroom suggests that the changes would make it a more comfortable place for its students.
