Abstract

The width and position of the 4 I 11 2 ( X1)→ 4 I 15 2 ( Z7) fluorescence line at 10157 Å in YAlO 3:Er 3+ has been investigated from 13 to 380 K. The line shift with temperature is due to the emission and absorption of virtual phonons. The line width is explained in terms of microscopic strains, direct phonon processes and Raman scattering of phonons. YAlO 3 crystals with dopant concentrations of 1.25, 30 and 50 at% of Er 3+ and varying lattice quality have been investigated.
