Abstract

The thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) has been carried out in trichlorobenzene solution at around 190°C in the presence of zinc and calcium stearates, stearylbenzyl β-diketone and 1–4 dihydropyridine diester derivative (DHP), under argon or in air. No synergistic effect between the two organic compounds is observed under argon, where DHP seems to be more efficient than β-diketone. In air, the degradation is much more rapid and a strong synergistic effect is obtained, being greatest for the mixture richest in β-diketone. Intermediate results are also observed under argon if the DHP has previously been oxidized.
