Abstract

AbstractOn the basis of the simultaneously measured free radical generation and HCl evolution a mechanism accounting for the effect of the oxygen on the degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is proposed. The mechanism is based on the reaction of oxygen with radicals generated in PVC to form unstable peroxy radicals. In addition, it is proposed that oxygen reacts directly with conjugated polyenes to form peroxy linkage.
