Abstract

Thermal behaviour of gamma irradiated free radical and isotactic polymethyl methacrylate has been studied at 256°. It is shown that radiolysic chain scissions do not produce unsaturated chain ends identical to those formed by disproportionation during free radical polymerization. Furthermore, initial terminal double bonds present in samples prepared by that mechanism are progressively transformed during the radiolysis in such a way that they become more reactive and able to initiate depolymerization at 256° with a higher rate.
