Abstract

Measurements of electron and ion temperatures and electron density in the F-region over Saint-Santin during the winter predawn period altow a determination of the energy given to the ambient electron gas by the photoelectron flux streaming into the magnetosphere. The energy input per thermal electron is 0·75 eV s −1 during the predawn period and 2.25 eV s −1 during daytime. The corresponding photoelectron flux is always larger than 10 9 cm −2 s −1 if angular scattering is ignored in the magnetosphere. The magnetospheric electron temperature ranges from 3000 to 5500°K and the difference between the ion temperature and the electron temperature is of the order of 100°K.
