Abstract

The thermal and ozone resistances of filled thermoplastic 1,2-polybutadiene rubber (1,2-PBD) and blends of 1,2-PBD and natural rubber (NR) have been investigated. The tensile strength was found to increase marginally in filled 1,2-PBD as well as 1,2-PBD-NR blends on thermal ageing. Except for a reduction in the tear strength in clay filled 1,2-PBD, the mechanical properties of 1,2-PBD systems showed a marginal increase after ageing at 70°C for 14 days, proving the outstanding thermal resistance imparted by 1,2-PBD. No cracks developed in filled or unfilled 1-2-PBD even after 52 hours' exposure at 40°C to ozone concentrations of 50 pphm. The ozone resistance of 1,2-PBD-NR blends was decreased with increasing NR content. Fillers adversely affect the ozone resistance of the blends.
