Abstract

Glasses have been prepared by substituting Ga 2O 3, B 2O 3 and Al 2O 3 for P 2O 5 in a base glass of composition Ag 2O ·1.5P 2O 5. Three series were prepared: Ag 2O· xM 2O 3·(1.5− x)P 2O 5 ( M=B, Al, Ga); 0⩽ x⩽0.2 for Al 2O 3, 0⩽ x⩽0.4 for B 2O 3 and Ga 2O 3. All substituents are effective in increasing both the glass-transformation temperature than the electrical conductivity (nearly two orders of magnitude for the x=0.4 glasses). The experimental data can be explained by admitting for the B 2O 3 a glass-forming role, for Al 2O 3 a network-modifying role, and for Ga 2O 3 an initial network-forming role changing to a network-modifying role as the substitution proceeds.
