Abstract

ABSTRACT Experimental studies indicate that the maximum stress acted on the top portion of the piston and stress concentration is also the main cause of fatigue failure. This article discusses the improvement on the piston to endure high structural and thermal stresses and to moderate stress concentration the top portion of the piston. An aluminum alloy piston can be replaced by a carbon-carbon piston which has low thermal stress in same working condition. In this paper, thermal analysis of carbon-carbon composite material on commercial vehicle diesel engine piston was studied and the results were compared with aluminum alloy piston for maximum stress.
