Abstract
The gratification of sharing in the presentation of The Hostage in New York has made me feel with Brendan Behan, ‘There’s no place on earth like the world!’ In London, the play appeared first at the Theatre Royal, Stratford (October 1958), the off-Broadway of London’s East End, moving later to the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre, where it ran successfully for over a year. I had read the published version, and to my delight found it a revelation and a revolution in the theatre. Despite the topical British references and the Irish slang, my co-producer1 and I wanted to bring it to America just as we saw it, complete with cast, director and author.KeywordsWater GlassProtestant ChurchEntire CastRehearsal TimeMacmillan PublisherThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
