Abstract

Abstract In earlier reports with severe aphasics we described the phenomenon of hemiplegic writing and attributed it to access of pre-processing levels in action and language. The present study extends these findings in ten aphasic patients with right hemiplegia who underwent a three-month training programme aimed at facilitating writing with the right arm though the use of a limb prosthesis. The results confirm the phenomenon of hemiplegic writing in a wider population of aphasic patients. Training with the right arm and prosthesis resulted in greater right than left arm/hand improvement. Moreover, improvement was also demonstrated on a range of language and non-language tasks following prosthesis therapy, though not to the extent shown in the hemiplegic limb.
