Abstract

Periodontal diseases are multifactorial diseases, initiated primarily by the bacteria present in the dental plaque. However, the amount of destruction of the periodontal tissues by this primary bacterial assault is linked to the host inflammatory response. Omega-3 fatty acids have a proven role in reducing inflammation. Hence, polyunsaturated fatty acids are used as dietary supplements in various inflammatory diseases, for their comprehensive benefits. A number of researchers have investigated the possible role of omega-3 fatty acids in the past decade. This review attempts to explore and present a gist of their investigations on the therapeutic value of the dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids for the control and prevention of periodontal diseases.
