Abstract

Therapeutic plasma exchange has already been applied to a surprisingly wide range of patients with dermatologic disease who were refractory to conventional therapy. In most instances plasma exchange has been used to remove circulating autoantibodies and immune complexes, but it has also been useful in removing drugs, toxins, and harmful metabolic products. The rationale for the use of therapeutic plasma exchange and its potential side effects are discussed. Details are given regarding its specific use in collagen vascular diseases and other dermatologic disorders.
