Abstract

Objectives
The objective was to establish a more appropriate correlation between clinical context and treatment modality for brown tumor of the jaws to determine the best approach.
Study Design
A literature review was made in the PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases considering mesh terms and Boolean terms "brown tumor AND hyperparathyroidism," "brown tumor AND jaws AND hyperparathyroidism," "central giant cell AND hyperparathyroidism." Inclusion criteria included clinical cases published from 2015 to July 2020 in English, Spanish, French, and German involving patients with brown tumor of the jaws and their therapeutic approaches. Exclusion criteria included case reports with patients without brown tumor of the jaws, without relation to the proposed theme, or with genetic investigation bias.
Results
Eighty-five relevant results were obtained. Among the therapeutic modalities, conservative approaches were found, such as parathyroidectomy and reconditioning of parathyroid hormone levels, with possible total or partial brown tumor regression, or corticosteroid infiltration, as well as curettage, enucleation, and invasive resections.
Conclusions
The best clinical approach results from the correct diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism and treatment of its cause. Given these points, a therapeutical approach for the jaws can be defined.
