Abstract

Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effects of limbal epithelial autograft and amniotic membrane grafting on recurrent pterygium. Methods There were 81 patients (94 eyes) with first recurrent pterygium and they were allocated two groups:excision of pteryginm with limbal epithelial autograft transplantation surgery (group A,45 cases with 48 eyes) and excision of pterygium with amniotic membrane grafting (group B,36 cases with 46 eyes),the post-operative follow-up periods ranged 18 months to analyze the recurrent rate, the repair time of epithelium and complication. Results In the eyes follow-up 3 of 48 eyes (6.3%) in group A and 10 of 46 eyes (21.7%) in group B were recurred. There was difference in recurrent rate between the two groups (x2=4.729,P =0.03).Conclusions Limbal epithelial autograt transplantation can reduce the recurrence and make the repair time of epithelium lower,It is a reasonable therapeutic method for the treatment of recurrent prerygium than amniotic membrane grafting. Key words: Recurrent pterygium; Stem cell; Transplantation; Amniotic membrane
