Abstract

Apheresis is a procedure to separate and collect or remove a particular blood component. Apheresis may be used for collecting a therapeutic dose of component, remove the circulating amount of harmful component/substances, or collect a particular blood cell/precursor from a patient for reinfusion. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a therapeutic procedure in which the plasma is removed and replaced with a replacement solution. It is used primarily for the removal of pathological immunoglobulin. Red cell exchange is a procedure in which the patient's red cells are removed and replaced with the donor red cells. It is usually used in the case of sickle cell disease to prevent stroke. Mononuclear cell collection is a procedure used primarily to collect peripheral blood haemopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) for autologous or allogeneic transplantation. As the most frequently performed procedures, they will be described in some detail in this article. Therapeutic leucapheresis and thrombocytapheresis are less frequently performed and will be mentioned briefly.
