Abstract

The role of the state legislature in abortion law change is discussed. As professional, legal, and public opinion mounts in favor of abortion law reform, legislative changes in most states can soon be expected. It is anticipated that the real legal changes will come in the courts, but the legislature still has a role in providing standards on who will perform the abortion, up to what gestational period, and under what procedures. Financial assistance and residency requirements are also areas for abortion legislation. It is suggested that in the midst of abortion law repeal, care should be taken to avoid the legislatures becoming an instrument of genetic engineering for political use.
