Abstract

Theoretical work on umbral oscillations and penumbral waves is reviewed. The 3-minute umbral oscillations are identified with the lowest fast magnetoatmospheric mode excited in the presence of the vertical magnetic field, in the shallow subphotospheric layers of the sunspot, while the running penumbral waves are gravity-modified magnetoacoustic fast modes generated in the horizontal penumbral magnetic field.
