Abstract

We review our SU(2) formulation of the t– J model as a description of the underdoped cuprates. The model incorporates spin–charge separation and successfully explains many unusual normal state properties, including the existence of a spin gap and the appearance of a Fermi surface segment. Very recently, we extended our theory to the superconducting state to show how BCS-like quasi-particles evolve out of the Fermi surface segment.
