Abstract

The evolution of ultra-short pulses from noise in a passively mode-locked solid-state laser is treated. The statistical properties of the laser field, such as correlation functions, the mean pulse shape and its fluctuations, are investigated. The maximum intensity and the width of the pulse train are estimated taking account of the amplification saturation. As an example of the application of the results to non-linear optics, TPF traces are calculated.
