Abstract

To study the Kondo effect in Sm and Tm impurities, the magnetic susceptibility of the impurity Anderson model with appropriate multiplet structures is calculated on the basis of the numerical renormalization group approach. The Kondo state changes from an electron-binding to a hole-binding type as the magnetic f 6( J = 1) level approaches the singlet f 6( J=0) level. In actual Sm systems, the hole-binding type state is expected to be realized consistently with the thermopower experiment. A two-electron-binding type state is expected to exist in Tm compounds for the Tm 3+ stable side.
