Abstract

A theory of the interaction of short laser pulses with plasmas is constructed based on the previously developed kinetic theory of a tenuous plasma. The generation of fast electrons by a relativistically strong femtosecond laser pulse in a plasma with a nearly critical density is investigated. The results obtained agree with the results from particle-in-cell simulations and with the experimental data.
