Abstract

Numerical solutions to the set of first-order differential equations which govern the Earth's electric field near the surface are obtained by the Runga-Kutta method. The techniques employed are not restricted by many of the assumptions which must be made to obtain more analytic-type solutions. Solutions are presented for cases which allow a difference in mobility of the negative and positive ions, permit the ionization rate to change with height, and introduce an arbitrary number of condensation nuclei.
