Abstract
It is shown from simple tunneling theory that standing-wave states give peaks in conductance, not steps, when the voltage dependence of the barrier penetration probability is accounted for properly. Hence, an alternative mechanism suggested by Wolf should be considered within the context of these findings. Location of the commensurate state when the standing waves have a finite lifetime is also discussed.
